What's The Great Pacific Garbage Patch?
What Is It?
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a mass of debris in the Pacific Ocean, having a span of about 620 thousand square miles. It currently resides in between California, and Hawaii. The mass contains more than 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic, that would weigh about 88,000 tons. It can be difficult to tell how accurate this is, due to the mass changing and moving around. Every year, 100 million marine animals die every year, just from plastic waste. They can get tangled in it, and drown, mistake it for for food and eat it, and they could die from starvation.
